DSL service is gaining popularity
among businesses and for residential service as well. Dial up is just
no longer viable solution if you want to stay one step ahead of your
competitors and T1 service may be out of your budget.
The
Different Types of DSL
ADSL: Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The
name describes the flow of bandwidth. Asymmetrical
because the downstream or the amount of bandwidth
flowing from the internet to you computer is much
higher than the bandwidth flowing from your computer
to the internet. ADSL is typically 6 megabits
downstream and 128K upstream. For
home use or
small business business, this type of DSL service
will usually suffice. ADSL Pricing varies on a
number of things but typically runs from $14.95 per
month all the way up to $80 per month. It is worth
noting that for $14.95 per month the service does
not come with a static IP address. The higher priced
service usually does. It is important to ask the
provider when ordering the service.
SDSL: Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. It
is named this because the bandwidth flowing to and
from your computer is the same.
SDSL is ideal for businesses
that send and receive larger files, have many
employees accessing the internet and require a
static IP address. It was developed in the mid
1990's and has been replacing T1 service where
available since it is much cheaper than T1 service
and with many of the same features. You can purchase
SDSL in different bandwidth levels such as 128K,
384K, 768K, 1.1M and 1.5M. The pricing for SDSL
service ranges from $79.95 for the 128Kbs all the
way up to $300 ofr the Full 1.5Mbps. It is a true
business class broadband solution.
IDSL: Lastly we have IDSL and it stands for
ISDN Digital Subscriber Line. IDSL service is a last
resort type of DSL. It is a last resort because the
only reason you would purchase IDSL is if ADSL and
SDSL weren't available due to either distance
limitations (which is 16,000 feet) or if there is
fiber optics on the lines that the DSL will be
running. IDSL is typically 144K upstream and
downstream and costs around $100 per month.
There are many different providers that offer DSL
service. They include:
Verizon
SBC
Covad
New Edge Networks
MegaPath Communications
Speskeasy
BellSouth
